Peter Falconio and Joanne Lees were a couple in love. They lived together in Brighton, England and were beginning to talk of marriage. In the year 2000, they started out on a highly anticipated world trip, visiting Kathmandu and southeast Asia. When they arrived in Australia, they spent six months in Sydney, where they worked to finance the next leg of their journey.
In July of 2001, the couple departed from Alice Springs, heading north in their not very reliable Kombi van. Then the unthinkable happened, leaving Peter dead and Joanne alone to tell her story. What happened that day was a mystery which took months to solve. Still today, people question Joanne’s story.
Join us at the quiet end for On a Long, Lonesome Highway. Today we’re discussing the tribulations Joanne had to endure before an assailant was apprehended, the motive for the attack, and the lack of public trust that left Joanne feeling twice victimized.

It amazes and saddens me how some members of law enforcement have no apparent qualms about putting an innocent person in prison. Jeffrey Deskovic comes to mind right away but can you imagine how many others there are that aren’t fortunate enough to have an expert advocating for them? The justice system needs an overhaul – first on the list for review should be making prosecutors, judges, and expert witnesses accountable for their actions. Thanks for a detailed review of this frustrating case.
Thank you for your comments, Rosemarie. I definitely agree with you and my heart breaks for those unfortunate enough to be falsely accused and convicted.
My best, Jill
